Panel Upgrade
We handle the permit, BC Hydro and the inspection
Your panel's full, your insurer's asking questions, or you're adding something that needs more power. We'll tell you straight whether you actually need a 200-amp upgrade, then handle the whole job: permit, BC Hydro, install and inspection.
New Panel, More Amps, or Neither?
Three different jobs all get called a "panel upgrade." Pick what sounds like your house below, and you'll see which one it usually is. A site visit confirms it, and lots of Chilliwack homes don't actually need 200 amps.
Tap what sounds like your house:
Same-size panel replacement
Your panel gets swapped for a new one at the same amperage. The wiring and service size stay. This fixes an insurance flag or an outdated panel and gives you a modern breaker panel with room to spare, without paying for amps you don't need.
When it fits: Insurer flagged it, Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok, or a fuse panel, with no big new loads planned.100-to-200-amp service upgrade
Big new loads need more amps coming into the house, not just more breaker slots. We pull the permit, install a new 200-amp panel, and book BC Hydro to disconnect and reconnect the service at the meter. Technical Safety BC inspects the finished work.
When it fits: Adding an EV charger, heat pump, hot tub, or a secondary suite.Neither: sub-panel, load management or repair
If your loads aren't maxed out and you just need more slots or a fix, a sub-panel in the garage or a load-management device can handle it without touching your service. Less work, less money. We'll tell you honestly if that's all it takes.
When it fits: Breakers tripping on a busy circuit, panel is full but nothing's overloaded, or a single circuit needs repair. Not sure which fits? That's exactly what the free site visit is for. We'll look at your panel, talk through what you're planning, and give you a straight answer before you book an electrical panel upgrade. Chilliwack homeowners get a no-obligation quote.
Signs Your Chilliwack Panel Is Running Out of Room
Most homeowners don't think about the panel until something starts acting up. Here's what to watch for.
- Breakers tripping when loads overlap
The heat pump kicks in while the dryer's running on a cold evening, and a breaker trips. It's not a one-off. That's a sign the circuit or panel is being asked for more than it was set up for.
- Lights dimming when big appliances start
A brief dim when something big starts is common. It's worth a look when it's getting worse or happens with more and more things around the house.
- No free breaker slots
Every slot's taken and you need to add a circuit for a garage, shop, or new appliance. Double-tapping two wires onto one breaker isn't the answer.
- Your insurer's asking about the panel
Insurers often ask about Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok panels at renewal, and some want it replaced. That's more of a paperwork deadline than an emergency. A licensed look tells you which panel you actually have and what the insurer needs.
- Still on a fuse box
Fuses work, but they're a generation behind breakers. You can't reset a blown fuse, and the panel itself is likely decades old. A swap to a modern breaker panel is usually straightforward.
A burning smell, a warm panel cover, or a buzzing sound is different. That's not something to plan around. Call an electrician now or reach us at (604) 754-4344.
How a Panel Upgrade Works With BDT
You plan around one day. We handle the permit, BC Hydro, and the inspection. Here's how a Chilliwack electrical panel upgrade actually goes, step by step.
- BDT Site visit and load calculation
We look at your panel, your meter, and what you're planning to add. A load calculation tells us whether you actually need 200 amps or whether a simpler fix will do. No charge, no obligation.
- BDT Written quote
You get a written quote with the scope, the price, and what's included. No surprises later.
- BDT Permit and BC Hydro
Technical Safety BC is the province's electrical safety regulator. They issue the permit and send the inspector. We file the permit and coordinate BC Hydro's disconnect and reconnect at the meter. You don't have to call either one.
- Your day Install day
The power is off for the better part of a day while the new panel goes in. Every circuit gets reconnected and labelled. The power comes back on once BC Hydro reconnects at the meter.
- BDT Inspection
Technical Safety BC inspects the finished work. That inspection is what gives you the permit closure your insurer and any future buyer will want to see.

What Shapes the Price of Your Panel Upgrade
There's no single number we can post online for a Chilliwack electrical panel upgrade. Homes here vary too much: age, service size, where the panel sits, what the utility needs. Here's what actually moves the price so you know what you're comparing when quotes come in.
Panel swap vs. 100-to-200-amp upgrade
Replacing an old panel with a new one at the same amperage is a smaller job than upgrading from 100 to 200 amps. The 200-amp path means heavier cable, a larger meter base, and a BC Hydro service change. Both need a permit, but the scope is different.
Overhead or underground service
Overhead service runs from the pole to your mast and down to the meter. Underground comes through a trench. An underground service change usually costs more because of the buried cable and the coordination with BC Hydro.
Meter base and mast condition
Sometimes the existing meter base and mast are fine and can stay. Other times they're undersized, corroded, or don't meet current code, and they need to come along with the upgrade. We won't know until we look.
Where the panel sits
A panel in a finished basement behind drywall takes more time and care than one on an open garage wall. Access affects labour, and sometimes it makes sense to relocate the panel while the work is open.
Code updates that come along
When the panel's open, the inspector sees everything. Bonding, grounding, and arc-fault protection may need to meet current code. These aren't extras we add for fun. They're part of a permitted, inspected job.
Circuits added at the same visit
Adding an EV charger circuit or a hot tub circuit while the panel's open is cheaper than booking a second job later. One permit, one inspection, one day with the power off instead of two.
The only way to get a real number is a site visit. We look at your panel, your service, and what you're planning to add, then give you a written quote with the full scope. No charge, no obligation.

Questions Chilliwack Homeowners Ask Before Upgrading
You're comparing quotes, reading up on what's involved, and wondering if it's actually worth it. These are the questions we hear most often before a breaker panel upgrade. Chilliwack homeowners ask them, and here are straight answers.
- Do I actually need 200 amps?
- Not always. We do a load calculation during the site visit. If your current loads plus what you’re planning to add fit within 100 amps, a panel swap at the same amperage might be all you need. The point is to match the panel to your house, not to sell you the biggest one.
- How long is the power off?
- The power is off for the better part of a day on install day. The rest of the timeline, permit filing and BC Hydro scheduling, happens with your lights on. Most homeowners plan around a single day.
- Who handles BC Hydro and the permit?
- BDT does. We file the permit through Technical Safety BC. They’re the province’s electrical safety regulator, the ones who issue the permit and inspect the finished work. We also coordinate BC Hydro’s disconnect and reconnect at the meter. You don’t have to call either one.
- Will a panel upgrade help with insurance or resale?
- A permitted, inspected upgrade gives you the paperwork insurers and future buyers want to see. If your insurer flagged a Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok panel, a replacement with a permit closure is exactly what they’re asking for.
- Can I add an EV charger or hot tub circuit at the same time?
- Yes. Adding circuits while the panel is open means one permit, one inspection, and one day with the power off instead of two separate jobs. It’s cheaper and faster to do it all at once. Learn more about EV charger installation or hot tub wiring.
- Who is BDT Electric?
- We’re a licensed electrical contractor based in Chilliwack. Our contractor licence number is LEL0210056, issued by Technical Safety BC, the province’s electrical safety regulator. You can look it up yourself on Technical Safety BC’s Find a Licensed Contractor tool. We carry a 5.0 rating from 32 Google reviews and do panel upgrades, EV charger installations, and electrical work across the Fraser Valley.
